Tourist Rest - 74 Elm Street - Mrs. T.H. Perrin
From Tom Perrin: This was the residence, from
1885 to the 1950's, of the Perrin family. Philander W. Perrin bought the
house at auction, along with 17 1/2 acres for $2720 in 1885. Philander died
in 1920. His son Thomas Howe Perrin (Brown & Perrin, T.H. Perrin & Co,
druggists) was born in the house and lived there until his death in 1921.
His widow, Ruth E. Perrin, entertained there such notables as FDR's wife
Eleanor Roosevelt and Henry Morgenthau Jr. (Secy of the Treasury under
Roosevelt). Ruth Perrin was Postmaster of Potsdam from 1934 to 1949, an
appointment she owed to her personal friendship with FDR beginning when he
was Governor of New York. Ruth also rented some of its 17 rooms to short and
long term boarders, students and tourists. Following Ruth's death in 1949,
the house was occupied by her son Thomas W. Perrin, attorney and police
justice for the Village of Potsdam. Since the late 1950's, the house was
occupied by Zeta Nu, Phi Delta and Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternities.
